Why is it important to DNA test?

  • DNA testing is universal throughout the breeding industry, especially in King Charles Cavaliers. We DNA test all of our parents to provide assurance that the pups are born cleared from over 30 genetic diseases that may affect their quality of life as they grow into full grown adults. Some of these diseases include:

    • Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) - DCM is a disease of the heart muscles that result in weakened contractions and poor pumping ability of the blood. As the disease progresses the heart chambers become enlarged, one or more valves may leak, and signs of congestive heart failure may develop.

    • Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome - Curly Coat syndrome is a severe congenital condition of the skin, coat, claws, and eyes in King Charles Cavaliers. It is also known as rough coat syndrome.  Symptoms include a curly or rough coat comes from the unusually curly abnormality of the Cavalier's coat which is apparent at birth.

    • Episodic Falling Syndrome (EFS) - EFS is a unique genetic disorder in the King Charles Cavalier. It has been recognised in the breed since the 1960’s. It appears no other breed is known to suffer from it. EFS is a non-progressive disorder that tends to improve with therapy and does not affect the life spans of dogs due to the disease.
